I’m always stating “The Best Thing About Gameschooling is…” well, here comes another best thing!

Games contribute so much to a cultural and geographical study of a country or civilization. It’s like having a class party, playing themed games and being immersed in the topic, every day!

We loved studying Ancient Egypt over the summer, and this year, in Gameschool style, we played Imhotep, a game with tons of hooks about Egyptian culture and life to dive into.

We studied who Imhotep was (architect of the step pyramid and later worshipped as the god of medicine), how they built their temples and pyramids, agriculture along the Nile, their religion, and more. Playing a game built around all these facets of Egypt blew the top off an amazing unit study!

This game has all the cool Egyptian stuff: temples, burial chambers, pyramids, obelisks, river boats, stone blocks. It’s a very easy game to learn and super fun to play.

On a player’s turn, he can take 1 of 4 possible actions:

  • Draw blocks from the quarry
  • Place a block on a river boat
  • Sail a boat to a monument
  • Play an action card

After a few rounds, this is what the monuments start to look like. They’re getting built with stones from all players. Who will get the most points?!?

Some monuments awarded points at the end of every round, some at the end of the game. Stone placement requires a thoughtful strategy, good resource management, and a little bit of luck!

As always, the art of negotiation is a huge part of playing!

Players have to be strategic but also have a back up plan. Everyone is going for the same few spots on the boats and the placement that awards the highest number of points so be prepared to be thwarted!

This game will give you lots to be curious about and will definitely encourage interest and enjoyment in your study of Ancient Egypt.

Thanks to Thames and Kosmos for sharing it with us!
