MY REVIEW
The Healthy Family Cookbook
America’s Test Kitchen cookbooks are my go-to. I have the 3 family cookbooks (plus a few others) and I use them almost exclusively. The recipes are perfect and there are hundreds to choose from.
My latest ATK Cookbook is the Healthy Family Cookbook, and I particularly love finding recipes that use healthy grains like barley, bulgur wheat, quinoa, wheat berries, amaranth, farro, and kamut, to name a few.
Even more applicable to everyday home cooks are the low-fat options that don’t scrimp on flavor. They’ve tried everything and know what works.
I’m just getting into this cookbook and have so far tried the following recipes:
- Fusilli with Asparagus, Peas, and Arugula
- Cuban Black Beans
- Whole-Wheat Pizza Dough
- Pizza with Garlicky Broccoli and Sun-Dried Tomatoes
- Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread
- Everyday Macaroni and Cheese
- Baked Chicken Fingers (Best chicken fingers EVER)
The recipes are fresh and filling with fewer calories and less fat than most traditional recipes, and there are so many more I can’t wait to try.
Like all America’s Test Kitchen cookbooks, there’s a section at the very beginning including information about healthy cooking guidelines, essential ingredients to healthy cooking, nutrition basics, measuring, and equipment essentials. I rarely end up Googling anything in the kitchen anymore – I just check my cookbooks!
ATK recipes totally speak for themselves, and if you’ve never browsed one of their cookbooks, pick one up. You’ll be hooked!
This Healthy Family Cookbook is a great start to cooking healthier for your family and getting more of the nutrients we need from the food we eat. There’s plenty of variety in difficulty level and recipes, so check it out!
Lodge Enamel Dutch Oven
Many of the America’s Test Kitchen recipes (particularly soups and some meats) require an enamel Dutch oven, so I’ve been wanting one of these for sooo long.
I wanted a Lodge because I knew the quality and value would be great, just like their cast iron dutch ovens.
With my new Lodge enamel Dutch oven, I made Cuban Black Beans (from the Healthy Family Cookbook). This recipes requires some stove-top sauteeing and then oven time. Lodge enamel Dutch ovens are ovensafe up to 400 degrees, and you only dirty one dish! I love that.
I also made Corn Chowder from the Family Cookbook (which requires a Dutch oven), and it was amazing.
You can use Lodge Enamel Dutch ovens on most cooking surfaces (gas, ceramic, electric), and in the oven. I’ve noticed it heats very evenly, and it’s so easy to clean.
Lodge has a great variety of cast iron cookware for all kinds of cooks. They’re reasonably priced and the enamel Dutch ovens are so versatile.
