When we first had kids we had cold cereal for breakfast, but I only bought Wheat Chex and Mini Wheats on the regular. Occasionally I would buy other things, but not often. Several years ago I completely stopped buying cold cereal except for Christmas. Everyone gets a big box of cold cereal and their own gallon of milk every year for Christmas. It’s one of our favorite traditions!
Eliminating cold cereal was a scary idea at first because it’s is SO EASY. But it’s also expensive and full of sugar and preservatives.
Instead of cereal, we cycle through
- oatmeal (rolled and steel cut, and the steel cut I do overnight in the Instant Pot so it’s hot and ready when we wake up.)
- quinoa pancakes
- whole grain pancakes
- peanut butter and banana toast
- German pancakes
- Granola
Here’s our favorite best recipe.
3 1/2 c. rolled oats
1 c. raw chopped almonds/walnuts
1 c. raw cashew pieces
1 c. unsweetened coconut
1/2 c. raw sunflower seeds
1/2 c. raw pumpkin seeds
2 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. nutmeg
1/2 t. salt
6 T. butter (3 oz.)
1/2 c. honey (6 oz.)
2 t. vanilla
I quadruple the recipe except the butter and honey I only double or triple so it’s not so sweet.
If you have a cherished granola recipe, share it with me! I’d love to find one I like even better than this.
