Play along with our favorite witches and wizards in another Hogwarts Battle challenge! The Charms and Potions Expansion to the base cooperative deck-building game takes us back to the classroom to complete challenges, courses, and more to defend the castle from the villains!

This is an expansion, so the core Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle game is required. Cooperative games are a genre that are a must-have in any gameschooler’s collection as they involve a unique set of skills and characteristics that help with brain development, logical and strategic thinking.

The Charms and Potions Expansion includes new character options in Ginny Weasley (Hero) and Pansy Parkinson (Villain), increasing the possible player count to 5.

The expansion includes charm boards, influence tokens, and a new set of card packs that include Locations, Dark Arts, Encounters, Villains, Hogwarts cards, as well as Ginny’s player board, Hero/Patronus card, and starting Hero deck.

Turns proceed in a series of 4 steps:

  1. Reveal and resolve Dark Arts events and the encounter. Encounters have effects that begin when certain game conditions are met.
  2. Resolve villain abilities.
  3. Play Hogwarts cards and take Hero actions. Players can use new charm abilities in this part of their turn. Charms are connected to a player’s health and can only be used once per turn. Other cards are played to gain resources and create effects, tokens are assigned to villains and creatures, and new cards can be acquired.
  4. End of turn. If the encounter from step 1 was completed, claim the encounter card to use the reward on a future turn.

The final catch is that Lord Voldemort can’t be defeated until all encounters are completed AND all other villains have been defeated. He’s the villainous one of them all and don’t you forget it!

The game ends when

  • Encounters are completed and all villains and creatures are defeated – HEROES WIN!
  • OR the villains and creatures control all the locations – HEROES LOSE.

Once the Heroes win, all players can move on to card pack 2 for another exciting cooperative adventure!

GAMESCHOOLING

Hogwarts Battle is a great game for reading comprehension, cooperation, and critical thinking. Every step requires high level reading and comprehension and provides great practice for and confidence in future encounters with difficult reading material. Playing themed strategy games is a great way to encourage children to challenge their strategic and analytical thinking in a fun way!
