We got Carcassonne by Rio Grande Games as our family game this year for Christmas and have had lots of fun playing it since. I love this game because, while it’s a strategy game, it’s simple with only a few rules.
Basically, you try to get as many points as possible by claiming fields, roads, cities, and cloisters. On your turn, you get to lay down a tile that builds onto the game board, which is always changing throughout the game and never the same twice, no matter how many times you play. Once you place your tile, you can put one of your game pieces on that tile to claim any of the aforementioned elements.
This is a fairly quick game, about 30 minutes, so you can play several times in one sitting. And it’s just as fun to play with 2 people as it is with 4 or 5, which is great for us because our son isn’t old enough yet. My husband and I have played lots just on our own so it’s a great date-night game as well as family game.
I can’t wait to try out some of the other versions of Carcassonne! Another winner by Rio Grande Games!
