MY REVIEW
Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack
I’d been looking for some large capacity internal frame backpacks for a little while and finally found this one by Teton Sports. I wanted my pack to work for hiking gear AS WELL AS for our 72 hour kits, and this 4000 cubic inch pack is just the right size for my husband and I and holds just the right amount of gear.
The pack itself weighs only 5 pounds and has a very thoroughly padded waist belt, lumbar support, and shoulder straps so the weight is distributed evenly and comfortably even when filled to the brim. There’s also an airflow system to keep the back off your back a bit and therefore reduce heat.
You can adjust the back length to fit a person of nearly any height. The adjustment is simple so you could easily switch off carrying the pack with someone much bigger or smaller than yourself.
There is a large main compartment perfect for a sleeping bag or clothing with pockets all along the sides and bottom.
I love the separate pockets along the exterior because it makes your gear very easily accessible. The pockets are large enough to fit most of the supplies you’d need to carry without putting anything in the sleeping bag compartment.
There is a pocket underneath the sleeping bag compartment on the outside and another one on the underside of the flap at the top, so lots of extra storage space.
The nylon fabric is thick and durable with an outer and inner cinch closure on the sleeping bag compartment to keep everything in there dry and warm.
There are straps at top for securing a bed roll (or brightly colored baby blanket in a pinch…).
On the outside front is a mesh pocket and some elastic loops great for attaching other kinds of supplies. I hooked up my Light My Fire mealkit with the harness to save space in the pockets.
Below the side pockets are two mesh water pockets that can easily fit 2 small water bottles each. The zippers are super heavy duty and this pack is comfortable to wear, even though it’s heavy.
I can’t wait to do some backpacking this summer!
Here’s a video review of the pack for your viewing enjoyment!
Mammoth 0 Degree Family Sleeping Bag
Even more than the backpack, I LOVE this family sized sleeping bag. First of all, a family/childs sleeping bag is SUCH A GREAT IDEA, particularly when one has small children.
When we go camping, I am constantly worrying about if my kids are warm enough and freezing to death myself checking on them every hour. If they’re sleeping with me, I KNOW they’re warm enough, and this bag is rated to be good down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Mammoth sleeping bag measures 94″ x 62″, just about the same size as two of our foam camping pads side by side and easily big enough for me, my husband, and at least one child.
I am 6’2″ and Boyd is 6’4″ and this sleeping bag is plenty long enough for both of us, and I don’t think I’ve ever slept in a sleeping bag that I could stretch out in. I typically avoid sleeping bags all together for this very reason, but the Mammoth is sooo long that I can stretch out with room to spare.
The liner is made from the SOFTEST and warmest flannel, with Superloft™ Elite 4-Channel Hollow Fiber insulation and a taffeta shell. There is a zipper guard all along the zipper that keeps out any cold air that might have come in through the zipper, and there are zippers on both sides for ease of use.
The mummy style hood is adjustable and can be cinched up for maximum warm and there is lots of double stitching and dual layering of fabric around the exterior for comfort and warmth.
The sleeping bag comes with a heavy duty nylon compression sack with handles for ease of carrying. The sack is huge – my 20 month old Gus is barely taller than it, but it’s no bigger than two sleeping bags and can easily fit more than 2 people, so a net save on space I would say.
This bag is perfect for family camping, and I would even love to sleep in it all by myself if given the chance…
Thanks so much to Teton Sports for sponsoring this week’s giveaway of these two great family outdoor products!
